Cost and pricing
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in San Diego?
A full gut bathroom remodel in San Diego County typically runs $25,000-$75,000 for a standard 5x8 hall or guest bath, with primary suite projects reaching $45,000-$95,000 for layout changes, custom vanities, and curbless tile showers. Cost drivers are wet-area size, tile selection, and whether plumbing is being moved. A same-layout refresh with the same footprint lands at $9,000-$18,000.
Do you charge for the design consult?
No. The in-home design consult is free for new remodel projects. The designer comes to your home, measures the space, talks through layout and finish options, and prepares a written scope with a flat-rate number. You decide whether to move forward with no obligation.
Are there any hidden fees on the invoice?
No. The flat-rate scope you sign covers labor, materials, demo, haul-away, and permit fees. If a hidden condition surfaces during demo (water damage, outdated wiring, etc.), we stop, show you the photo, and quote the change in writing before continuing. No surprise invoices.
Do you offer payment plans for a full remodel?
Many of the crews we work with offer progress payments tied to project phases: a deposit at scope sign-off, a draw at rough-in, a draw at tile-set, and a final draw at walkthrough. Exact terms depend on the crew and the project size, and we lay them out in the scope before you sign.
Timeline and process
How long does a full bathroom remodel take?
From the first design consult to the final walkthrough, most full gut remodels run 8-12 weeks total: 2-4 weeks for design and material selection, 1-2 weeks for permitting, then 4-8 weeks of active construction. Same-layout refresh projects run 2-4 weeks once materials are on site. We confirm a written timeline with your scope.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in San Diego?
Yes, when you move plumbing, electrical, or load-bearing walls, or replace a tub or shower pan. The City of San Diego, the County of San Diego, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, and most surrounding cities handle this through an e-permit portal. The crew pulls the permit as part of the scope, and we schedule the final inspection before final payment.
Can I live in my home during a bathroom remodel?
Yes, most San Diego homeowners stay home during a bath remodel, even with a single bathroom. The crew contains dust with plastic sheeting and runs a HEPA air scrubber. Water is usually off for a day during plumbing rough-in. For a single-bath home, the crew can coordinate a temporary toilet and shower plan and schedule critical work in 1-2 day blocks to minimize disruption.
How quickly can a design consult happen?
Same-day phone consult, in-home design visit within 3-5 business days anywhere in San Diego County. Demo start is typically scheduled 2-4 weeks after the design sign-off, depending on material lead times and permit turnaround in your city.
Design and materials
Do you provide a 3D render before construction starts?
Yes. After the in-home consult we produce a 3D render showing layout, tile pattern, fixture placement, and finish selections. You sign off on the render before demo starts. Changes after sign-off are quoted in writing as a change order, never as a surprise on the invoice.
What tile works best for a San Diego bathroom?
For shower walls, large-format porcelain (12x24 or 24x24) gives a modern look with fewer grout lines to maintain. For bathroom floors, porcelain tile rated for wet areas is standard. We work with Daltile, Arizona Tile, MSI, and Floor and Decor, and you can supply your own tile if you prefer.
Can I supply my own fixtures, tile, or vanity?
Yes. We are happy to install owner-supplied materials. The scope and warranty cover the labor; the materials warranty comes from the manufacturer. Many homeowners pick their own vanity and freestanding tub, then have the crew handle the install and plumbing trim.
What is a good layout for a small San Diego bathroom?
The two highest-impact moves for a 5x7 or 5x8 bath are replacing a swing door with a pocket door to free up wall space, and switching to a wall-hung vanity that exposes more floor. A curbless shower with a linear drain opens the room visually and is easier to clean. We measure your existing framing at the consult and confirm whether those moves fit before they go on the scope.
How our referral service works
What does Bath Pro SD actually do?
Bath Pro SD is a referral service. We match you with a vetted, insured local crew that has done similar work in your area. We coordinate the design consult, the scope, the schedule, and the punch list. The crew you work with is a separate, independent local business; you pay them directly for the work.
How do you screen the crews you refer?
We verify current general liability and workers comp insurance, recent client references, and CSLB license status before we refer a crew. We recommend homeowners verify any contractor's license at cslb.ca.gov before work begins. We do not guarantee the work of the crews, and we are not the contractor of record.
What happens if something goes wrong with the remodel?
We stay involved through the punch list. If there is a workmanship issue, we connect you with the crew to get it resolved. We track crew performance across every project, and crews with repeated issues are removed from the referral list. The contract you sign is with the local crew, not with Bath Pro SD.
Do you only work in certain San Diego neighborhoods?
No. We work all 67 cities and communities in San Diego County, from the coast (Coronado, Imperial Beach, Oceanside) to the backcountry (Ramona, Alpine, Valley Center). Pricing is the same across the county, with no trip fees and no mileage upcharge.
Accessibility and aging in place
What does an aging-in-place bathroom remodel include?
A typical aging-in-place scope adds a curbless or low-threshold walk-in shower, grab-bar blocking in the walls, a comfort-height toilet, a wall-hung or roll-under vanity, a fold-down teak bench, anti-scald valve, and a higher-CFM quiet exhaust fan. Many of these upgrades also qualify a home for a wider buyer pool, so they pay back at resale.
How much does a walk-in tub cost in San Diego?
Walk-in tub installs in San Diego run $8,000-$18,000 depending on the tub brand, the plumbing rework, and whether tile or solid-surface surrounds are added. The tub itself is the largest line item, and most homeowners pair the install with a grab-bar package and a comfort-height toilet to handle everything in one project.
Can a curbless shower be added without moving the drain?
Sometimes. A curbless shower needs a linear drain or a center drain set into a pre-sloped foam tray like Schluter Kerdi-Shower. If the existing drain is in a workable location, the install is straightforward. If the drain sits in the middle of the floor away from the planned shower footprint, the slab has to be opened and the drain relocated, which adds cost and time. We confirm at the design consult.
What safety upgrades make the biggest difference for seniors?
The four highest-impact upgrades for senior safety are a curbless or 2-inch-curb walk-in shower, a comfort-height toilet, a pressure-balancing anti-scald valve, and a shower bench or fold-down seat. We also recommend grab-bar blocking in the wall framing even if the bars are not installed right away, so the bath is ready when needed.
